Summer Soldes in Paris

For a Cheapskate like me, the Paris soldes are the most wonderful times of the year. Due to some kind of silly law, retailers are only allowed to have storewide sales twice a year. I know, I don't get it either, but their ridiculousness is our gain, as the relative rarity of the sales drives up competition and pushes retailers to get their end-of-season wares out the door. During this twice-yearly event, shops big (Hermés on rue St-Honoré) and small (Tuxedo in Montmartre) slash their prices in two or three rounds throughout five weeks in both winter and summer. It's the perfect time to stock up on French fashion and find some serious steals on both basics and splurges, depending on your outlook and bank account.

Starting this week are the summer soldes with shops launching their first démarqué. So wherever you see these beautiful signs, you're Paris Cheapskate-approved to stop in and check out sandals, summer dresses and all-important capri pants at around 20-30% off all over Paris. Get the steal now or wait for the next round at 50% off as July begins. Or, if you're among the brave, wait for the final round in late July to try to get some hot deals at their maximum discount. I can't guarantee a wide variety of sizes, but there will be the occasional treasure at 70-90% off. At that point, it's almost a crime not to buy a new addition to your wardrobe. My key advice: go in the the afternoon during the week, so as to encounter as few crowds and psychotic Parisian cheapskates as possible. Happy shopping!
