Cheap Drinks: Rum Tasting

(Watermelon Rum Punch via Southern Food & Beverage; click through for recipe)

Rum is one of those liquors that I never think I want ("It's too sweet" or "It's too girly"), until it's in my drink and I'm giggling contentedly (case in point: mojitos). But I'm learning more... I now know that rum is made from sugarcane or the byproducts thereof (i.e. molasses). I also know that the Royal Navy used to impose a daily regimen of rum upon their sailors to ward off scurvy (wayyy more fun than eating an orange). Hopefully this Monday, taqueria Candelaria will school me in the basics of appreciating the sugarcane devil when they host a rum tasting sponsored by Plantation white rum. Cross through the taqueria and find yourself not only in wealth of knowledge on Tiki cocktails but also transported via taste buds to the sandy beaches of Plantation's home base, the Caribbean!

  1. Mmm, that drink looks refreshing. Rum doesn't exactly scream "Paris," but I sure would be happy to do that tasting if I could!
